For weeks the song topped the charts all over the world and sold in almost ten million copies, making it one of the best selling songs of the 20th century. According to Joseph Murell's The Book of Golden Discs (1978), Mungomania was possibly the most startling pop phenomena to hit Great Britain since the Beatles.
