Danish National Symphony Orchestra was established in 1925 and is the oldest radio orchestra in the world. For years, this orchestra has been at the very top of the world's orchestral performance. Since 2004, the Music Director of the Orchestra has been Thomas Dausgaard, with Yuri Temirkanov as their chief visiting conductor. The great reputation that the Orchestra has in the musical world is owed to two legendary conductors: Fritz Busch and Nikolai Malko. The Orchestra payed tribute to Malko by organizing and naming after him a competition for young conductors. In about eighty years of the Orchestra's existence, they have worked not only with numerous distinguished conductors, but also with the greatest composers of the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries, including Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Paul Hindemith, Pierre Boulez, Witold Lutoslawski, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Hans Werner Henze. The Orchestra has premiered a number of pieces and operas, and recorded numerous awarded releases. Orchestra members, after their performance in Zagreb several years ago, stated that their Zagreb performance was one of the most beautifully concerts that they have had in recent years. This is, therefore, an opportunity to grant them their wish, and that is to play in Zagreb again.
Thomas Dausgaard took over the Orchestra's position of the Music Director in 2004. Under his management, the Orchestra has increased their number of appearances around the world. Dausgaard, apart from being the Music Director of the Danish Orchestra, is also the chief conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the visiting conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonics from Milan and St. Petersburg, RAI Torino Orchestra, La Scala, BBC Orchestra, and others. He also frequently conducts most of the greatest American orchestras.
Ulla Miilmann is the first flute of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. She received her doctoral degree from the North Carolina School of Arts in the USA. She has won several awards in international competitions of flutists. She is one of the founders of the Wind Quintet (1999) of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Her awards include Rodovre Music Prize, Jacob Gade Grant and the artistic prize of Danish music critics.
